Are you enjoying your good days?
June 28, 2010

TODAY’S VERSE: Ecclesiastes 7:14

“On a good day, enjoy yourself; On a bad day, examine your conscience. God arranges for both kinds of days So that we won’t take anything for granted.” [The Message (MSG) Copyright © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson]

After several months without seeing her, these past two weekends I have been truly blessed to enjoy my beautiful 7-year old Veronica, especially on Father’s Day. And, through the end of next month, we’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy each other under a warm and beautiful Summer here in Ohio! 🙂

Being away from our loved ones for months is not the ideal scenario for anyone, especially those of us who are family oriented, for the sense of loneliness that it produces is nothing to be desired. However, when the good days to be with them come, we surely praise God and enjoy them to the fullest, for we know these special moments will not last forever.

My friend, never take for granted the blessings you currently have, for our earthly journey is not a very long one. Let us enjoy them while we have them, and trust God for His strength and comfort when our time to depart from them arrives.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being such a wonderful Father always there even when at times we find ourselves away from our loved ones. Thank You for never forsaking us, and for allowing us to enjoy good days while making us strong for the not-so-good ones. Keep us always safe and strong no matter what. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.

Are you recharging from your Power Source?
June 14, 2010

TODAY’S VERSES: Psalm 121:1

“I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.” [The Message (MSG) Copyright © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson]

If you have one you might experience the same thing I do. Every single day my cell phone needs to be recharged or else it will die on me by the time the day is over. So part of my daily routine is to make sure I am recharging it in my vehicle while driving or at home while it is not being used.

Our spiritual life, specifically our connection with God, is very much like a mobile phone. If we do not make it a habit (or discipline) to recharge our spiritual batteries frequently we will find ourselves feeling empty or alone in this world. But when we make it our priority to seek His will every single day we will definitely experience the satisfaction of experiencing a deep connection with our True Source of power, strength, and love. And nothing becomes an impossibility as our faith builds on this daily connection, believe me.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for always being available to grant me power and strength to carry on with my daily challenges and pressures. Forgive me when I have not made it a priority to recharge my connection with you on a daily basis, and help to me make the most of my time as I strive to follow Your lead. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.

Are we taking God’s grace for granted?

TODAY’S VERSES: 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.” [The Message (MSG) Copyright © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene H.  Peterson]

A few days ago a Whispers subscriber shared with me the following incident:

“Yesterday, I was standing in line at a local Walmart. The lady behind me was on the phone telling someone that she was a … teacher who had just been wrongfully selected for permanent layoff. She started to murmur and complain about how hard the job was and how she had been mistreated by her superiors. She went on to say “as a Christian God had seen her struggles and how he would avenge her.” She said God knows me and he knows how I am!”

“What she didn’t remember was that sometime ago she prayed to God that he would give her that job, and how God had answered that prayer, and how God knew she would be strong enough to be a light in a place of great darkness. She didn’t realize that many others believers prayed for that same position but he gave it to her!”

“I was hoping to hear her thank the Lord for answering her prayer and for seeing her through a time of great trial but she never did.”

Does this scenario sound familiar? How many times have we complained and complained about our circumstances while missing the fact that it is God Who has graciously answered our prayers and provided for our daily needs? Isn’t it sad that we sometimes choose to be upset and murmur about everything going on in our life without taking the time to thank God for His everlasting goodness and faithfulness?

While God’s love and care for us are eternal, there’s no guarantee that our earthly blessings will be there tomorrow. Therefore, let us give thanks to God at all times recognizing Him as our Ultimate Source of our entire life. Perhaps this daily expression of humbleness before God might help us enjoy our blessings even longer.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being Yahve-Jireh –my Supreme Provider–, always there when I need You. Forgive me when I have taken Your grace and love for granted many times, not realizing that everything I am and everything I have comes from You. Teach me to be thankful no matter what, for You have promised not to forsake Your children. In Jesus’ precious name I stand, amen.

Are we loving and gracious like our Father?
May 24, 2010

TODAY’S VERSES: Psalm 145:8, 9, 13b, 17
“God is all mercy and grace— not quick to anger, is rich in love.”
“God is good to one and all; everything he does is suffused with grace.”
“God always does what he says, and is gracious in everything he does.”
“Everything God does is right— the trademark on all his works is love.”
[The Message (MSG) Copyright © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene H.  Peterson]
In times of social and economic challenges like the ones we live in, it is very easy to lose sight of our call to be gracious and loving toward others at all times. As earthly creatures our tendency is to fight for survival, even when that means stepping upon others to prevail. Especially if we’re faced with lack or adversity of some kind, we see ourselves as priority number one and helping others becomes second.
The plain truth is that our Heavenly Father is not like that, and the good news is that we do not have to live like that either. As today’s verses declare, our God is a gracious and loving God, good to all and always doing what’s good and right for us. He is our utmost example of how we should live our daily life, for virtues such as love and grace are not bound by circumstantial realities but profound character. And living beyond circumstances while developing a strong character is key to successful living.
Aren’t we glad God is Who He is?
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being such an awesome God –always quick to love and working with our best interest at heart. Forgive me when I have lost focus of my divine call to be like You, and help me to share Your love and grace to those around me. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.

Declare that God is good despite what you see
May 18, 2010

TODAY’S VERSE: Psalm 34:8

“Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see— how good God is. Blessed are you who run to him.” [The Message (MSG) Copyright © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson]

“Discover for yourself that the LORD is kind. Come to him for protection, and you will be glad.” –CEV [Contemporary English Version (CEV) Copyright © 1995 by American Bible Society]

I know how difficult it is at times to understand why things happen in life, why our circumstances are not the way we planned or expected, why we are here when we should be there. As a human just like you I’ve also failed God many times by not honoring His Word or listening to His still voice on a timely manner. Worst yet, I know first hand what it means to make not-so-wise decisions that eventually catch up with us and become an inevitable gap that hinders us from seizing that awesome opportunity that just slipped from our hands because we were not ready for it. I know how that feels, and I’m sure sometime in your life you’ve felt the same way.

But despite how we see our present or our future, one single truth remains: God is good and will continue to be good! If we were able to uncover and see the many times our life has been spared from death, or the many ways we’ve been protected from harmful intentions, or the countless times our simplest prayers have been answered when least expected, I’m sure you and I would agree that God is indeed faithful, far beyond what we imagine possible.

Let us make it a priority to praise God every day for Who He is, and not focus so much on where we are right now. For the truth of the matter is that every stage in life is temporary, and where God will place us tomorrow does not compare to where we stand today. God has better plans for you and me. He always knows what’s best, and will take us there.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being such an Awesome and Faithful God even when at times I fail and mess things up. Thank You for always being so patient as to not count my faults against me. I ask forgiveness for not relying 100% on You, and commit to praise You every day, for You are worthy of my adoration and will forever be good. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.

TODAY’S VERSE: Hebrews 10:36

“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. [Scripture taken from the Holy Bible, New International Version®. Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 International Bible Society. Used by permission of Zondervan. All rights reserved.]

What a tough year we had in 2009! I’m sure most of you reading this devotional may agree with me. Personally speaking, this one (combined with 2008) have been my toughest ones –full of losses in all areas, especially within my family and close relationships.

However, I have no intent to quit or let go of my God-given mission and my hope for a brighter future. God has been so good to me and I am convinced that in 2010 He will continue to be the Faithful Heavenly Father He has always been. Regardless of circumstances, and despite our human limitations and imperfections, you and I can continue to smile and shine each day because of God’s awesome love, grace and joy… for these are definitely the key behind the power and strength we all need to carry on.

Ready to keep going in 2010? With God’s help **I AM!** 🙂

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being such a Faithful and Loving God –always ready to provide for our needs, strengthen our inner being and guide us as we walk our earthly journey. Teach me to maintain an attitude of gratitude, persistence and devotion to You as I walk into a brand new year, and help me to focus on You when life seems tough. In Jesus’ precious name I rejoice in Your everlasting love, amen.

TODAY’S VERSE: Psalm 117:2

“For His mercy and loving-kindness are great toward us, and the truth and faithfulness of the Lord endure forever. Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!)” [Amplified Bible (AMP) Copyright © 1954, 1958, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1987 by The Lockman  Foundation]

Each day brings us new opportunities to either complain about everything going on around us, or give thanks for how blessed we really are. Every single day the choice to respond either way is in our hands…

As we enter into a new season of hope and expectation around Christmas and the upcoming New Year, it is a great time to consider God’s faithfulness in our lives. For despite all the troubles and tribulations we’ve gone through in the past year, you and I are still standing because of God’s eternal lovingkindness and faithfulness. For God as our Heavenly Father loves us so much, and every single day He bestows blessings toward our loved ones and us. Perhaps we have not taken the time to stay still and see Him working on our behalf…

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your awesome faithfulness despite everything else happening around me. Thank You for the gift of life, health, and resources to be able to live and give. Teach me each day to enjoy the beautiful life moments You grant my family and me, and give us strength to continue on our earthly journey living a life worth living. In Jesus’ precious name, amen.

TODAY’S VERSE: Philippians 4:4
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” –NIV[1]

“Celebrate God all day, every day. I mean, revel in him!” –MSG[2]

The following “alphabet song” is an anonymous creation I repeat once every year because it awesomely declares the true spirit of praise and thanksgiving despite our present circumstances:

Although things are not perfect
Because of trial or pain
Continue in thanksgiving
Do not begin to blame
Even when the times are hard
Fierce winds are bound to blow
God is forever able
Hold on to what you know
Imagine life without His love
Joy would cease to be
Keep thanking Him for all the things
Love imparts to thee
Move out of “Camp Complaining”
No weapon that is known
On earth can yield the power
Praise can do alone
Quit looking at the future
Redeem the time at hand
Start every day with worship
To “thank” is a command
Until we see Him coming
Victorious in the sky
We’ll run the race with gratitude
Xalting God most high
Yes, there’ll be good times and yes some will be bad, but…
Z ion waits in glory…where none are ever sad!

Dear Heavenly Father, **THANK YOU!** for being such an awesome God!! I cannot truly understand Your love and grace toward me, but I know that You are pleased with a genuine heart full of praise. I declare that You are my God, and despite my current circumstances, I bless Your Holy Name and believe in Your awesome power working miracles on my behalf. In the mighty name of Your Son, Jesus I pray, trust, and rejoice, amen!

Please enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

TODAY’S VERSE: Psalm 145:1-2a

“I lift you high in praise, my God, O my King! and I’ll bless your name into eternity. I’ll bless you every day… [The Message (MSG) Copyright © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene H.  Peterson]

Every day seems to bring countless reasons to complain and be stressed out. On the other hand, every day there are countless reasons to be thankful. Just look all around you.

Yes, I agree there is a lot of uncertainty and insecurity out there. However, there are also many great people making a big difference in so many ways, providing resources and avenues for you and me to be blessed today. This aside from a beautiful creation from which we receive so much for our living existence.

Above all, let us not forget that behind it all is an Almighty and Always-Loving God taking care of His children and creation even in ways we would never think possible. Today, and every day, let us demonstrate our gratefulness to Him by praising His Holy Name… by expressing our gratitude for His endless care for us… by letting Him know how much we love Him.

Dear Heavenly Father, what an awesome privilege to be a child of The Almighty God of the Universe! Thank You for all the blessings that have come to me and my loved ones in so many ways. I acknowledge that everything comes from You, and worship You by surrendering my heart and will to Yours. In Jesus’ precious name I praise and rejoice in Your faithfulness, amen.

TODAY’S VERSE: Proverbs 16:16

“How much better it is to get skillful and godly Wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.” [Amplified Bible (AMP) Copyright © 1954, 1958, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1987 by The Lockman Foundation]

“Get wisdom—it’s worth more than money; choose insight over income every time.” [The Message (MSG) Copyright © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene H.  Peterson]

In challenging financial times, like the ones we are all experiencing today, it is very easy to get caught in our need for money and financial security for obvious reasons. We all need to secure a living, especially those with family obligations. We all need to make sure we have enough to cover other necessities, such as insurance. And we all need to consider saving for our future years when our physical ability will not allow us to work anymore.

Being responsible for ourselves and our families and providing for their needs is very important; however, the focus on money and financial resources alone will never produce in us a healthy lifestyle in sync with our God-given design. Unless we choose to live in “survival mode” for the rest of our earthly existence, we definitely need something much more valuable and precious than money: godly wisdom.

I invite you today to take a moment and evaluate what is most precious for you right now, and to ask God for a deeper level of wisdom and understanding in your life to deal with all your present and future challenges and decisions. God will not only honor your prayer but will also work on your behalf so that you may experience the awesome results of trusting your Creator, Provider, and True Source of all wisdom. Trust me… there is nothing in the entire Universe more valuable than this.

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for being The Great Provider of everything I am and everything I have. Thank You for life itself, and for the gift of love and friendship. Most of all, thank You for always being willing to grant us wisdom when we most need it. Teach me to trust in Your unfailing faithfulness while I continue walking and focusing on what’s really important in life. In Your Son Jesus’ precious name, amen.
